A Step-by-Step Guide to the Ausbildungsplatz Application for Non-EU Citizens

You are ready. You have your documents. Now, how do you actually get the job?

Applying for an apprenticeship from abroad is competitive. German employers are often hesitant to hire non-EU citizens because of the visa paperwork. To win one of these jobs in Germany, you need to be flawless.

Here is your battle plan for securing an Ausbildungsplatz.

Step 1: The Documents (German Format)

Do not send a US-style resume. Germany has its own rules.

  • Lebenslauf (CV): Tabular, chronological, with a professional photo (yes, really!), date of birth, and clear language levels.
  • Anschreiben (Cover Letter): Specific to that company. Why this bakery? Why this IT firm? Mention your German level and your visa eligibility.
  • Zeugnisse (Certificates): Your translated school diplomas and internships.

Step 2: Where to Search

Don’t just use Google. Use the specialized platforms.

  • Bundesagentur für Arbeit: The official job board. Filter by “Ausbildung.”
  • IHK (Chambers of Commerce): They have “Lehrstellenbörsen” (apprenticeship exchanges) for every region.
  • Azubiyo / Ausbildung.de: Popular commercial sites.
  • Agencies: A recruitment agency get-talent.eu in Europe often has exclusive contracts with employers specifically looking for international talent (e.g., in nursing).

Step 3: The Application Strategy

  • Timing: Apply 8-12 months in advance. Training usually starts in August/September. You should be applying the previous Autumn.
  • Quantity vs. Quality: Don’t spam 100 companies. Pick 20, research them well, and write personal letters.
  • The “Non-EU” Note: Be upfront. “I am a citizen of [Country], currently holding B1 German certificate, and willing to relocate.”

Step 4: The Interview

It will be online (Zoom/Teams) and it will be in German.

  • Tech Check: Good lighting, good microphone.
  • Prep: Be ready to answer “Why Germany?” and “Why this trade?”
  • Ask Questions: Ask about their experience with international trainees. It shows you are serious.

Step 5: The Contract

Once you get the offer, they send 3 copies of the contract. You sign, send them back, they get it stamped by the IHK, and send one back to you. Only then can you apply for the visa.
